Escaladei
A small settlement beside the Charterhouse whose Carthusian domain gave Priorat its name and whose three current wineries retain distinct public identities.
Escaladei is a settlement within La Morera de Montsant municipality, crossed by the riuet de Scala Dei below the Montsant range.

Cellers Scala Dei, La Conreria d'Scala Dei and Terra Dominicata each have a current public identity and official facility evidence. Escaladei is also recognised as a DOQ village-wine name.

The Charterhouse
The priory behind Priorat
Founded in the twelfth century, Santa Maria de Scala Dei was the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula. Its domain developed into the historic priory from which Priorat takes its name.
The monks left in 1835 during the ecclesiastical confiscations and the complex fell into ruin. The Generalitat now owns the protected monument and restored elements explain its layout and enclosed life.

Settlement life
Vin Blanc, La Mercè and mountain roads
Escaladei celebrates La Mercè around 24 September. Around All Saints, Escaladei and La Morera hold the Festa del Vin Blanc around a local sweet-wine tradition. Check the current programme.
There is no railway station. Nearby settlements are close on the map, but mountain-road journey times matter more than straight-line distance.
