A recommended variety in DOQ Priorat
The DOQ Priorat regulatory council lists Carinyena with Garnatxa as a recommended red variety and describes both as the appellation's most important native grapes.
The council's own territory account places vineyards across a wide altitude range. That variation matters when reading a grape whose ripening conditions differ between lower villages and higher sites.

Carinyena also anchors DO Montsant
INCAVI includes Carinyena among the four historic and predominant varieties of DO Montsant. It is found across several of the appellation's internal landscape zones and in both varietal wines and blends.
Samsó and Carignan can appear as alternative names in regional and international material. Producer labels and official records are retained in their own wording where identity matters.

Old vines need a precise claim
Carinyena is frequently discussed through old vineyards, but old vine has no single meaning unless a source gives a planting date, documented range or clear threshold. Replacements and mixed-age parcels can make one number deceptively simple.
Age can be important without becoming a guarantee. Site health, vine material, yield, farming and the conditions of a particular harvest still determine what reaches the cellar.

The grape rewards place-by-place reading
Porrera's steep folds, the lower country around El Masroig and the compact holdings near Torroja provide different contexts for the same variety. Their shared grape does not erase those differences.
When a label names a village or parcel, check whether that wording is a controlled origin term or descriptive information. The distinction protects both the place and the bottle in front of you.
