Els
Guiamets

A small wine village above a reservoir, close to the boundary between the Priorat and Ribera d’Ebre comarcas.

The village occupies a low ridge above the reservoir.

Olive trees, vineyards and wooded slopes surround its compact centre. This is the Baix Priorat, close to the southern edge of the comarca, with Capçanes and Marçà to the east and north-east.

Els Guiamets belongs to DO Montsant. Its 12.14-square-kilometre municipality had 254 residents in the 2025 register and an official altitude of 226 metres.

Water and cultivated ground

A reservoir below the village

Construction began in 1951. The reservoir now supplies irrigation across Els Guiamets, El Masroig, La Serra d’Almos and Garcia.

It lies south-east of the centre. From the roads above it, the village, vines and water sit in the same view.

Wine

Five verified producer relationships

The group combines village cellars, registered facilities and producers whose work joins Els Guiamets to other parts of southern Montsant.

The cooperative

Three dates survive from its beginning

1913

The agricultural syndicate was founded.

1917

Another account dates the cellar itself to this year.

1920

The organisation received official status.

These dates describe different stages and should remain together. The surviving record does not support reducing the foundation to a single year.

The historic Celler Els Guiamets identity ended when the cellar joined Unió in 2014. Àngel Teixidó has overseen it since that transition. Unió is a second-tier cooperative: an organisation formed by cooperatives, rather than a simple merger between two village cellars.

A working cellar enlarged for the next stage

Cellers Unió inaugurated an expansion costing more than €3 million. The 1,200-square-metre building added an automated packaging line, an underground room for about 600 French and American oak barrels and an elevated tasting room intended to bring more visitors into the municipality.

Perlat, Dairo and Mas dels Mets are current ranges made here. Mas dels Mets continued after the 2014 transition; Gran Mets belongs to the cellar’s earlier record.

Water in the streets

A fountain attributed to Jujol

Piped water reached Els Guiamets in 1911. The monumental fountain in Plaça de Pau Castellví is attributed to Josep Maria Jujol.

The village washhouses were restored in 2025. A guided route now joins them to the wider story of water in the municipality.

Neus Català i Pallejà

“I carry the earth of Els Guiamets on my shoes”

The words are Català’s own, recorded by the Ajuntament as “Porto terra dels Guiamets a les sabates”. She was born here in 1915. After the Spanish Civil War she joined the French Resistance, was arrested and deported to Ravensbrück.

She died in Els Guiamets in 2019. The village commemorates her with the Solidaritat sculpture by Ció Abellí in Plaça de la Joventut and a Stolperstein outside her former home.

The village record

Older than the surviving archive

La Tosseta

The archaeological record includes an urnfield at La Tosseta, evidence of settlement long before the present village.

Tivissa and 1843

Els Guiamets belonged to the wider territory of Tivissa before becoming an independent municipality in 1843.

The fire of 1903

A fire destroyed the town hall archive. The loss helps to explain gaps and conflicting dates in the village record.

Sant Lluís

The parish church occupies the skyline. The present building dates from 1791 and stands on the site of an earlier church.

Civil War

Hospital trains stopped here

Vil·la Enriqueta served as a rearguard field hospital during the Battle of the Ebro. Hospital trains reached Els Guiamets station and the municipality also retains air-raid shelters from the conflict.

The council’s first tourism plan brings these places into the public account of the village rather than treating them as isolated remains.

Getting there

Plan for the road, not the station

Passenger service at Els Guiamets station was withdrawn on 3 March 2025. The tracks and station remain, but no passenger trains stop there.

Approach by road from Capçanes, Marçà or the N-420. Confirm winery appointments and exact meeting points before travelling.
